The OLIVE is a Patented David Pagan Butler invention designed specifically for an Organic Pool.

OLIVE is a multifunctional floating filter unit that contains a biofilm substate filter, a vortex filter, an open mesh filter and a plant container for nutrient absorption. All work simultaneously and perform different water cleansing actions. In addition the OLIVE provides surface water movement and oxygenation in the pool.

We need filtration to reduce the amount of nutrient in the water to a level that inhibits the growth of algae - single cell suspended algae, which makes the water green and opaque, and filamentous algae which forms strands or mats over the surface. Both are unpleasant for swimming.

Part of the cleaning processes of the pool are performed by biofilm on the underwater surfaces in the Organic Pool (Natural Swimming Pool). They consist of billions of microorganism filtering nutrients from the pool water they need for their growth. They do however create a slippery surface due to extracellular polymer substances. A biofilter, provides an alternative habitat for the same naturally occurring organisms to thrive. They are nurtured with a flow of water to bring them nutrients and a continuous supply of oxygen. And as the internal surface area of the biological substrate media is very large it has the effect of suppressing the biofilm growth on the pool walls and floor and other surfaces.
